PHI220: Body & Mind

simon — Wed, 02/20/2008 - 23:27

Explore the fascinating relationship between the body and the mind. Part 1 of this unit examines the nature of mental states, surveying philosophical theories about the kinds of things mental states might be. Part 2 focuses on intentionality. You will consider whether intentionality can be naturalised and examine the intentional states known as propositional attitudes. The unit will also guide you to consider whether mental states can be causally aff ected. Part 3 focuses on consciousness, examining various concepts of consciousness and arguments attempting to show that consciousness cannot be accounted for within a materialist view of the world.
